The Future of Paleofuture (and Its Creator, Matt Novak)
I'm departing Gizmodo after almost 10 years and trying to decide what to do next.

After almost 10 years with Gizmodo, I’ve been told my services will no longer be needed. Thanks to Australian labor law, that means I still have a job until January 13, but I haven’t yet figured out what I’ll do next. And I’m open to suggestions.
Ideally, I’d love to get a full-time job writing for another publication, but media jobs are pretty scarce right now. I plan on moving back to the U.S. soon, and I’ve thought about restarting my work at Paleofuture.com, but that’s a gamble.
I’ve also thought of writing at Substack, though I’m not sure about the tradeoffs. If I offer subscriptions at Paleofuture.com, I’d have more control over my content, but I also suspect I’d have less exposure than what can be provided by the Substack ecosystem.
If you have any experience with Substack’s paid subscriber model and can offer advice, I’d love to hear it.
Apologies meant to comment earlier...but whatever you do...keep it up! I make videos on youtube and honestly think ya could do the same. With your writing skill and the abilities of editors out there (lmk if you want any help!)...you could replace you other income with various sources like this, patreon, youtube, etc...
No experience with the paid model here yet but I've seen quite a few that seem to be doing well. Patreon seems to be a bit easier in that regard with different levels of memberships but that ties into different services / levels of benefits.
I've enjoyed your articles at Gizmodo over the past few years and will be sad to see you go! But very excited to see what you do next :)
Happy 2023!!
